Have you ever wondered just how long that Model A or AA was assembled after it left the Rouge Plant en route to one of Ford’s 31 other assembly plants? That was my question and I wanted to figure it out as close as possible.

It is not known if any shipping records of the various Model A/AA parts were kept by Ford (I am sure there was) or have even survived. However there were certain processes that happened to get those parts to the assembly plants for assembly purposes.

During the Model A years, 1928-1931, there were 32 assembly and 3 wholesale service plants (see below) throughout the United States. The major production and assembly plant was the Rouge Plant (engine assemblies, fenders, body panels, paper products, electrical wire, steering wheels, glass production and other items) in Detroit, Michigan. Other Ford “parts manufacturing” plants were located at Kearny, New Jersey (also an assembly plant); Hamilton, Ohio (steel wheel production); Flat Rock, Michigan; Green Island, New York (radiator production); St. Paul, Minnesota (glass production); Glassmere, Pennsylvania (glass production); and Iron Mountain (iron mine and lumber production), Highland Park (Fords giant machine shop and the Henry Ford Trade School, also paints, ammeters, crankshafts and other forgings as the engine, axle, etc., were manufactured here) , Phoenix, Northville, Waterford, Plymouth and Nankin Mills, Michigan. Dearborn, Michigan, was the site of Ford’s experimental laboratory, as well as the Ford Airport and the airplane manufacturing plant. Other items also came from outside sources such as the carburetor; electrical items as horns, distributors, spark plugs, batteries, generators, shocks; steering gears; wheels; tires; etc.  

Once the parts were finished, they were then transferred to the Rouge Plant where they were arranged for assembly and for shipment to the other assembly plants throughout the United States.

  As the parts arrived at the Rouge Plant, they were taken to their specific assembly stations and were sent down a series of conveyors. The conveyor system was developed by the Ford Motor Company which saved the company time, money and energy and enabled the men to stand still at their work. The conveyor system was carefully timed and synchronized to insure an even output and govern the rate of production. Consecutive operations were placed adjacent to one another. The machines being placed in sequence made it possible for each succeeding operation to be passed on to the next with a minimum of handling and delay. All items were inspected for workmanship and quality and were tested at every stage of its manufacture.

  All the body parts were formed at the Pressed Steel Building with the wood parts coming from the Iron Mountain plant. While the Rouge Plant also assembled complete bodies for assembly, which were to be distributed in the nearby territory, other body parts were shipped in three sections. The rear, the two sides and the front comprised the “knocked-down”, unpainted body. Ford’s major principle of manufacturing was two fold. Manufacture near the source of supply and assemble near the point of distribution which was one of the main reasons for shipping “knocked-down” bodies. By shipping “knocked-down”, it was possible to get 77 Tudor Sedan bodies or 130 Phaeton bodies in one freight car. A major savings!

  As other parts were completed for assembly at the Rouge Plant and/or for shipment to other assembly plants, they were thus sent to their pre-final assembly stations. Here they were stacked and waited for the freight cars to be loaded with the parts to be shipped throughout the United States.

Of all the known items to be manufactured at the Rouge Plant, the completed engine is the only known component which was officially numbered and recorded on the day of the stamping. However, the 1928-1929 cowl and tank assembly, A-9002, also carries a stamping on the lower left hand corner. This stamping appears both up side down or right side up. Some claim this was the body assembly date, maybe, maybe not as will be discussed below in a chart. Question is, was this stamp put on the tank at the time of manufacture of the tank itself or was it put on the tank just before the assembly of the body.

  The engines were all completed assemblies before shipment to their final assembly plants. It took about 10 hours for blocks to be cast into cylinder blocks to the finished assembled and inspected motor. Once the “break in” was complete to loosen it up, the engine was stamped with its specific Engine Serial Number which were then recorded in the “Daily Engine Production Log”. These numbers were as such: a star followed by an A (for cars and light vehicles) or AA (for trucks) followed by the numbers ranging from 1 through 4,849,340 (1927-1931 production only) followed by another star. Such as *A192831* or *AA192832*. In late January or early February of 1931 the numbers 1, 6, and 9 were changed according to the February, 1931 Ford Service Bulletin. This was “to lessen any possibility of outside individuals attempting to change engine numbers”. (These engine serial numbers were also stamped on the left top rail of the frame, opposite the clutch pedal at the time of engine drop into the frame). Once the motor was inspected, it was moved to the pre-final assembly station for shipment to an assembly plant. If the motor did not meet Ford’s standards or if there was a problem with it, the motor was then put aside and repaired then sent on its way. If it could not be fixed, it was destroyed.

  Once the orders were placed from the various assembly plants (or maybe Ford designated what went where) and the freight cars were loaded with parts, the train was on its way. As stated above, the Rouge Plant was the major manufacturing plant for all the Ford parts with the exception of some outside plants to take care of some other parts. The Rouge Plant was also an assembly plant which assembled both cars and trucks. But there were also other assembly plants which were located at strategic trade centers throughout the United States.

These plants were as follows preceded by their equated assembly plant letter codes: (A or AA) Atlanta, Georgia; (BO) Buffalo, New York; (CE) Charlotte, North Carolina; (CR) Chester, Pennsylvania; (CHI) Chicago, Illinois; (CI) Cincinnati, Ohio; (CL or CLE) Cleveland, Ohio; (G) Columbus, Ohio; (DS) Dallas, Texas; (DR) Denver, Colorado; (DM) Des Moines, Iowa; (E) Edgewater, New Jersey; (H) Houston, Texas; (I) Indianapolis, Indiana; (JE) Jacksonville, Florida; (KC?) Kansas City, Missouri; (KY) Kearny, New Jersey; (LA) Long Beach, California; (LA) Los Angeles, California (the month and year appear as part of the number); (LE) Louisville, Kentucky (the month and year appear as part of the number); (MEM) Memphis, Tennessee (sometimes has an AX preceding the number); (?) Milwaukee, Wisconsin; (NO) New Orleans, Louisiana (the number “2” precedes the NO); (NK) Norfolk, Virginia; (OC) Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; (?) Omaha, Nebraska (possibly used AU); (?) Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; (PO) Portland, Oregon; (R) Richmond, California; (F) Detroit (Rouge), Michigan (FD noted on an early 1928 Tudor); (SFA or SFAA) San Francisco, California; (AS) Seattle, Washington; (S, SAX or SAXC) Somerville, Massachusetts; (STL) St. Louis, Missouri (has AX preceding the STL); and (TC) Twin City, St. Paul. Minnesota. The three (3) wholesale service plants were in Washington, D. C., Fargo, North Dakota, and Salt Lake City, Utah. These three plants did not assemble any cars or trucks. However may have been a drop off location of assembled cars and trucks to transport to their closest dealerships.

  Following the assembly plant letter codes were numbers. These numbers were stamped at the time of assembly of the body at their respective assembly plant. They were stamped into the front cross member of the body itself, a few into the body side rails on the floor board level, or into the wooden cross member on certain body styles as Cabriolets and Fordors. Such as SFA192831. They can be located anywhere on the body’s center cross member and can be oriented to read from driver to passenger side, from passenger to driver side, or from back to front. The numbers represented the number of bodies that were being assembled at each assembly plant.

According to Ed Francis and George DeAngelis, in their article of the March/April, 1977 issue of Model “A” News titled “Establishing Model “A” Production Dates”, the assembly plants were divided into three categories:

  1. “Major”: which produced bodies for its own line, but also produced bodies for other assembly plants. The following are known “major” assembly plants: Rouge Plant.

2. “Standard”: which assembled bodies from partly assembled kits supplied by the “major” assembly plants or vendor body companies as Budd, Murray and Briggs. They did not have stamping machinery. The following are known “standard” assembly plants: Louisville. 

3. “Minor”: which had limited facility and they received completely built-up bodies from the “major” assembly plants or from vendor body companies. The following are known “minor” assembly plants: Cleveland, Jacksonville and Portland.

  At this point in time, it is not known just what the other plants were. (Wrote George DeAngelis on February 13, 2005 to see if he could answer that question).

  Trying to figure out just how long it took a particular freight train to go from The Rouge Plant to the various assembly plants was a feat in itself.

Mr. Hilding Larson, Union Pacific historian, related that it took about 10 days to go from the Rouge Plant to Ford’s assembly plant in Seattle, Washington, where to closer ones it was not as long as one can see from the Bill of Sale data from the assembly plants below.

Neil Besougloff, Editor of “Classic Toy Trains” and fellow Model A’er, indicated several factors which affected train times in the 20’s and 30’s. The first was geography: (the distance from the Rouge Plant to the various assembly plants) ; the second factor was the way the railroads were laid out: (there were about two dozen major railroad lines during this time period thus using the same line to go from one place to another would be quicker than changing from one line to another); the third factor was the amount of transfers the boxcar or boxcars were put through on their destination: (just how many rail lines the freight cars had to go through to reach its final destination, lengthened the time of arrival to the assembly plant) ; and a possible fourth factor may have been Ford himself (did Ford have any influence with the railroads to get his rail cars to their final destination quicker than other companies?).

  There were nine (9) assembly plants within a 379 mile radius of the Rouge Plant:

1. Cleveland, Ohio (CL/CLE) 174 miles

2. Columbus, Ohio (G) 206 miles

3. Cincinnati, Ohio (CI) 272 miles

4. Chicago, Illinois (CHI) 286 miles

5. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (?) 291 miles

7. Buffalo, New York (BO) 365 miles

8. Louisville, Kentucky (LE) 375 miles

  There were thirteen (13) assembly plants within a 540 to 793 mile radius of the Rouge Plant:

There were three (3) assembly plants within a 1211 to 1324 mile radius of the Rouge Plant:

There were five (5) assembly plants within a 2297 to 2411 mile radius of the Rouge Plant:

4. Richmond, California (R) 2401 miles

  There were also three (3) service centers:

  These service centers did not assemble any vehicles that is known of. More information is needed here.

Once the freight train arrived at the assembly plants, (or as in the case of the assembly plants on the west coast which the parts may have been brought in by ocean steamer), they were unloaded and the parts were put in their right spot in the assembly process or they remained in the boxcars until needed. The assembly called for chassis assembly, body building, and all the paint, trim and upholstery work. Some of the plants manufactured cushions, springs, and closed bodies. The branches all operated under pretty much the same system, using the same standard of tools and building cars and trucks in the same way.

  Once the car or truck left the assembly line, they were then shipped out to one of the various Ford dealerships throughout the assembly plant’s territory for sale among the public. Some dealers sent drivers to the assembly plants to drive cars back to their dealership for sale; some were shipped by railway cars; some by transport trucks, such as the Model AA Ford Taylor Truck-a-Ways; and some were transported by boat. In some cases, the public were permitted to drive their car off the assembly line.

Just how long did it take for parts to go from the Rouge Plant to the various assembly plants and out the door to the public? What engines went where? How long did they sit around before being installed into a chassis? Those were questions I wanted to answer but in essence can only speculate due to the fact that the records of shipping the various parts are not to be found to my knowledge, even at the archives. Apparently these records were destroyed in a Ford Archive fire many years ago. This is why we have the “Early” (January, February, March and April); “Mid” (May, June, July and August); and “Late” (September, October, November and December) Definition of Dates in the Judging Standards along with the fact that “in view of the lag time between drawing preparation and actual incorporation in to production, and Ford’s policy of often using the entire stock of superseded parts, whenever a month is stated for the commencement of a configuration, the earlier configuration will also be acceptable for two months thereafter.”

  According to the below data, there was a wide range of “days” from the time the engine was stamped to the “DAYS 2 SALE” of the vehicle, weather it was from an assembly plant or a dealership. Just what the reasons were are many: Newer engines could have been shipped before older ones; engines could have sat around either at the Rouge or other assembly plants before assembly; vehicles could of sat at the assembly plants before being bought up by dealers or the public; vehicles could of sat at the dealerships before being bought up by the public; ANY OTHER THOUGHTS OR REASONS ?????

  However, there is one item that we do have records on and that is the completed and stamped Model A/AA engines which brings this article to a head. My goal was to look at the next step in the process and get an idea of just how long the parts may have sat around the assembly plants to be ready to assemble on a car or truck. And those items would be the factory and dealership’s Bill of Sales and Titles that were originally written and given out at the time of sale of a vehicle or a number of vehicles either from the assembly plant or the dealership.

  When I did my index of The Restorer, Model A News and The Double A’er, that was one of the things I looked for. Surprisingly, I found a few, especially those which came from Lynn White in Loyalton, California (see The Restorer, July/August, 1990). Lynn’s father, Ed. G. White, had a dealership called the Ed G. White Ford Dealership, Loyalton, California. Since one of Ford’s policies was to manufacture near the source of supply and assemble near the point of distribution, practically all, if not all, of the Model A’s and AA’s for which Mr. White bought from Ford, came from the Ford Assembly Plant in (SFA and SFAA) San Francisco up through about July, 1931 and from (R) Richmond, California from August, 1931 through end of production. According to the map, the San Francisco Assembly Plant was the furthest assembly plant from the Rouge Plant and it took about 12-14 days to get parts from the Rouge Plant to San Francisco.

 About 136 Bills of Sales were viewed from this source to produce the following data. Just a very small percentage of the unknown total amount but at least it gives you some idea of “parts in, parts out” in the assembly process. Also listed in these were key numbers which are also indicated below according to the engine stamping date and the vehicle it represents.

So just how long did it take to assemble a car and/or truck at the San Francisco Assembly Plant? If one has the right paperwork, we can come real close in determining that answer.

EXAMPLE NO. 1:

In March of 1929, Mr. Ed White of Loyalton, California placed an order with the Ford Motor Company’s assembly plant in San Francisco, California. He ordered a Closed Cab Stake Body Truck with Dual Transmission Low Speed, # AA1130009; a Standard Coupe, #A1155754; a Roadster with Rumble Seat and Right and Left Fender Wells, # A1155921; a Standard Fordor with Right and Left Fender Wells, # A1216737; and a Standard Tudor, # A1217056. On March 28, 1929, the order, represented by Ford Motor Company’s Invoice Number E41104, was taken and the paperwork was filled out to transport these vehicles from San Francisco to Loyalton, California. According to the stamping dates of the engines through March 28, 1929, it took 27 days to get the Truck assembled; 22 days for the Coupe and Roadster; 13 days for the Fordor; and 12 days for the Tudor. These numbered days do not reflect the true amount of time it took to assemble the vehicle.

  What these numbers do encompass is from the time each block was stamped to the time the block and other items were loaded onto the rail cars at the Rouge Plant for shipment to San Francisco; the train travel time it took to get to San Francisco; the amount of time the parts were left sitting after being unloaded and before assembly; the assembly time; and the amount of time the vehicles sat around the assembly plant before being shipped to a dealer. (This process is reflective of most assembly plants recorded in this study where data from the Factory Bill of Sale was used). With 12 days being the quickest turnaround for the Tudor, it had to take less than the 12 –14 estimated days to get that engine and other assembly parts to San Francisco. And with everything else in place, hypothetically speaking, these vehicles must have been assembled as fast as they were brought in. As for the others, who knows of their delay or not as seen in the data below. The weather could have had a big influence, especially in the wintertime as these freight trains had to go over two major mountain chains to get from the Rouge Plant to San Francisco.

  On March 29, 1929, these five vehicles were loaded in a Great Northern rail car, # 39763, via the Western Pacific Railroad Company, and shipped northeast to Loyalton, California, approximately 180 miles distant, and arriving there five days later on April 3, 1929. One can read about the loading process in The Restorer, Vol. 19, No. 1, pp. 6-9 (1974) titled “Packing and Shipping Ford Model A’s and parts in 1928”.

EXAMPLE NO. 2

In March of 1931, Mr. Ed White of Loyalton, California placed an order with the Ford Motor Company’s assembly plant in San Francisco, California. He ordered three Standard Coupes, # A4342485, # A4357097 and # A4357399; one Town Sedan, # A4357388; and one Closed Cab Pickup, # A4342130. On March 23, 1931, the order, represented by Ford Motor Company’s Invoice Number G6241, was taken and the paperwork was filled out to transport these vehicles from San Francisco to Loyalton, California. According to the stamping dates of the engines through March 23, 1931, it took 43 days to get the Closed Cab Pickup and the early numbered Standard Coupe assembled; and the other three 37 days. These numbered days do not reflect the true amount of time it took to assemble the vehicle. What these numbers do encompass is from the time each block was stamped to the time the block and other items were loaded onto the rail cars at the Rouge Plant for shipment to San Francisco; the train travel time it took to get to San Francisco; the amount of time the parts were left sitting after being unloaded and before assembly; the assembly time; and the amount of time the vehicles sat around the assembly plant before being shipped to a dealer. (This process is reflective of most assembly plants recorded in this study where data from the Factory Bill of Sale was used). With 37 days being the quickest turnaround for the two Coupes and the Town Sedan, and compared to Example No. 1, who knows just what the delays were. Weather could of delayed the parts going over the Rockies and the Sierra Nevada Mountain Ranges.

  On March 24, 1931, these five vehicles were loaded in a Western Pacific rail car #13010, and shipped by the Western Pacific Railroad Company, northeast to Loyalton, California, approximately 180 miles distant and arriving there three days later on March 27, 1931.

 Also included is a list of about 250 vehicles, which were from Provincetown Motor Sales in Provincetown, Massachusetts. This list includes engine number, date delivered to dealership, date sold, key numbers as well as to whom. Mr. Richmond Bell from Wellfleet, MA provided the list. This will give us a comparison of cars going to the East Coast with those going to the West Coast. With this data, the DAYS 2 SALE is represented from the ENGINE STAMP DATE to DATE SOLD AND DELIVERED TO THE DEALERSHIP as this gives us a closer look at the production time other than selling the car itself to a customer. The assembly plant represented here is (S, SAX or SAXC) Somerville, Massachusetts since it is closest to the dealership.
