June 21st , 2008
Third Annual
Pacific Northwest Picnic.

The third Annual
northwest picnic was held on
June 21, 2008 at Fletcher
Anderson’s place in
Chehalis,
Washington.
What a wonderful day for a picnic.
The weather was just perfect, not too hot, it was dry (for some
people this is hard to believe for
Western Washington), not too windy but
a slight breeze and just a great group of wonderful Model A and
other classic car enthusiast’s with their families. One of our club
members and a dear friend of ours, Andy Panagiotou advised me he had
4 generations of his family. This was a wonderful turn out and Fletcher and Rod did
another outstanding job. It has been a lot of work for them,
especially since the 2007 Flood. They had to replant most of the
split rail post leading up to the bridge and I understand they put 3
sacks of cement around each post this time to help keep them down. That group really puts on a good show. The cooks were
excellent and all the food was just great. All the BBQ items were
provided by the Cowlitz
A’s and others in that area and then there was Pot Luck which all in
all, just a whole bunch of food. I think most of it was well taken
care of as I did not see too much left at the end. We will be adding more to this as we progress and if some
of the attendees have some pictures and/or stories to tell about the
picnic, please get it to me and I will try to get it into the web
site as soon as I can. By the way, I received my third Pacific Northwest Annual
Picnic Coffee Cup so I know it was the third one. I will take some
pictures of each one and get them entered here also. Thanks,
Dick Burton

THIS IS AN AIRCRAFT WHICH PROVIDED US WITH GREAT ENTERTAINMENT.
THERE WILL BE MORE INFORMATION ON THIS AIRPLANE BELOWHERE IS A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE AERIAL SHOW THE
AIR PLANE,
PILOT AND OWNER He aircraft is a
STARDUSTER 2 Bi-plane and was built over a 15 year period and has
been finished for about 1 year. This was not a kit and The owner,
Robert (Bob) Gruber had to make whatever items he needed for the
airplane from a set of plans. Bob is a retired tool and die maker so
I am sure that helped quite a bit. The engine is a WWII vintage R755-9
which has 245 HP at 2200 RPM and was made by “Jacobs” and was
originally on a Cessna UC78 (Military Type used for training and
light transport). Bob has 2 other airplanes and between
him and his son “Carl”, they have a total of 5 airplanes, one being
a Cessna 170 which was used in the movie series “Northern Exposure”.
He also has a total of 12 older cars with 5 being Model T’s, a 1914
Hudson, a 1948 ford, a 1940 Ford Coupe, a 1940 Ford four door sedan
with original engine, 1 1948 Ford, 1 1949 Studebaker, a 1951
Chrysler, 62 Buick Special Convertible and a 1965 El Camino. Carl, who is Bob’s son was the pilot
for this entertainment that really got the juices flowing doing his
maneuvers in the air. He has been flying since he was about 2 years
old and he currently races the Bi-plane at Reno Air Races. I think I can speak for just about
everyone at the picnic, we all appreciate their efforts very, very
much and a great big thank you for all your efforts and exhibition
show you put on for us. Hopefully we can have a repeat of this at
next year’s picnic. Maybe we can get the grass strip a little more
on the level side with less bumps so Carl does not have to do all
that bouncing. He did a wonderful job with it though and again, a
great big THANK YOU!

RASING OF THE FLAG

Only Fletcher would invite 20 friends,
serve wine and snacks to watch him get it up. I'm currently
re-reading a great book called "The Flags of our Father's" a
detailed account of the battle of Iwo Jima, but more
particularly the lives of the flag raisers and how it was that
six seemingly unconnected solders who in the length of time for
a camera shutter to work would forever be connected in history.
I doubt Rod and Fletcher's wind sock raising will be forever
etched in our memories but for the record Fletcher and Rod are
the two doing the hoisting and John Carlile is making sure the
parts go together. Also to give credit where credit is due Joe
Rosenthal took the historic Iwo Jima picture and John Glenn took
the Wind Sock raising. But then when you think of it name wise
both of these men are very much historical figures, so maybe
this picture will have lasting significance.
